Caring for All, Building a Better Tomorrow

In September 2023 the TCI chapter of international based charity United Way proudly launched its “Yes I Can Read” Intervention Program enrolling 120 students from two local Providenciales schools.

With 60% of the island’s children reading at 3 years or less below the required level, intervention is essential before Grade 3 level (ages 7-8 ) to reverse the trend.

Island House and its founder Grant Noble quickly came on board, keen to support local communities and their children struggling with these acute literacy challenges on a daily basis.

Unitedis the way we create lasting change

Today, the dedicated United Way TCI team includes 3 intervention teachers, 1 literacy assistant aided by 7 volunteers across 3 schools in Long Bay, The Bight and Five Keys. Together, they have built a nurturing environment of trust, support, and measurable progress for over150 children, however hundreds more would benefit from the programme

At present, Island House supports United Way’s work in three main ways:

Through the “Yes I Can Read” Intervention Programme, Island House has committed to increasing the opportunities, education and experiences available to children on the island. Donations are always welcome and will help to fund the work of Literacy Assistants, After School Tuition and Literacy Summer Camps for local children
“Pack for Purpose” With hundreds of guests visiting the TCI from overseas each year, one small way of contributing is by Packing for Purpose to help build a vibrant Library of children’s books for the islands. By packing a much loved story or two in your suitcase from the bookshelf at home, bring the simple pleasures of imagination and adventure, learning and literacy to the children of the TCI. Your small gesture can spark a lifelong love of reading .
