Environment & Conservation: Preserving our Reefs with the Turks & Caicos Reef Fund

With its stunningly diverse island habitats from reefs to mangroves, beaches to marine parks, Island House LVM and Founder Grant Noble are proud to call the Turks & Caicos Islands home.

Central to this is the desire to help support and preserve the extraordinary natural environment that makes the islands so special and which is a fundamental draw for the guests who enjoy their time with Island House every year.

Since 2025, the Turks & Caicos Reef Fund (TCRF) has been one of our key charity partners, with their focus on protecting and restoring the coral reefs that define our islands' beauty, biodiversity, and essential tourist economy.

Back in autumn 2025, the Island House team were lucky enough to be invited to learn about the TCRF’s work at close quarters from their current home on South Bank Marina. Executive Director Alizée Zimmermann explained the importance of the Fund’s efforts, and we were privileged to witness the priceless Coral Biobank for ourselves.

Coral Reefs Under Threat

The reefs of the Turks & Caicos are among the most spectacular in the Caribbean, but they face serious and growing threats. Rising sea temperatures, coastal development, pollution, and overfishing all place this irreplaceable ecosystem at risk.

The health of the marine environment is directly tied to the well-being of local communities and the tourism economy that sustains them. Founded in 2010, the TCRF is a nonprofit working across four core pillars - Education, Research, Advocacy, and Inclusion - to take meaningful, hands-on action to protect what makes these islands "Beautiful by Nature."

A Permanent Home for Marine Conservation

In December 2025, the Turks & Caicos Reef Fund reached a landmark moment in its history, officially closing on a $1.1 million property that will become its permanent home. This achievement was made possible by an extraordinary coming together of the TCRF community: board members, staff, volunteers, and supporters who share a belief in the long-term future of marine conservation in these islands.

With the property secured, TCRF has now entered full fundraising mode for Stage 1 development of a dedicated research and education facility. This next phase will deliver a dry and wet lab, as well as a separate, bio-secure and light-controlled living coral biobank - a facility purpose-built for the science of reef restoration.

In 2026 and beyond, the commitment remains clear: to protect, preserve, and rebuild the coral reefs and marine ecosystems of the TCI through science, education, and local leadership.

Island House Support

Our short visit to the Reef Fund to see the scientists’ skill at close hand was an unforgettable part of the team’s island itinerary. From watching the individual corals move and feed, to learning more about the current threats to this magical ecosystem, an educational trip is perfect for guests of all ages.

Along with our existing work, using TCRF to install safe swim zones on our beachfront villas, Island House are working on a new set of initiatives for 2026/27 which will directly bolster the work of TCRF. From villa owner support to guided private visits to the new Coral & Research facility, we intend to raise awareness of the incredible work taking place on our doorstep.

How You Can Help Now

Ocean Legacy Lane – Be Part of the Movement: The Ocean Legacy Lane paver programme was instrumental in helping TCRF cross the finish line on the property purchase, and it remains active. Each paver is an opportunity to leave your mark on something truly lasting.

Adopt a Coral: For just $50, visitors can adopt a Staghorn coral fragment growing in TCRF's in-water nursery at ThunderDome, North West Point. Each adoption comes with an e-certificate and TCRF membership - a meaningful and lasting souvenir of your time in TCI.

Adopt a Coral Ladder: For those who dive regularly or return to the islands year after year, an annual $1,500 donation lets you adopt an entire coral ladder. Name it, dedicate it, and come back to watch your corals grow - and eventually help plant them back on the reef.

Interested in diving with the team? Every year TCRF hosts a citizen science dive expedition aboard the Turks & Caicos Explorer II.

Donate Directly: Individual donations of any size make a real difference. Business sponsors can also become Gold or Platinum partners from $1,000. Visit tcreef.org/donate to contribute.

Lasting Impact

Thanks to donor support, TCRF has installed over 125 sea-floor moorings across the TCI - eliminating anchor damage to coral - built the first Living Coral Biobank in the UK Overseas Territories, and conducted landmark reef surveys of East Caicos with funding from multiple grants . Every donation is used efficiently and effectively to ensure maximum impact for TCI's marine environment.

There are also small, but important steps we can all take when enjoying the oceans such as wearing Reef Safe sunscreens and always booking tours with reputable local operators who work to minimise their ecological impact.

We encourage all owners and visitors to consider how they might give something back to the reef they snorkel, dive and marvel at -  helping to ensure it remains just as breathtaking for generations to come.
